The cemetery of Santa Ifigenia was founded in February of 1868, to the northwest of the city of Santiago de Cuba, and it was declared National Monument February 7 1937 and ratified as such by the Revolutionary Government May 20 1979. In this cemetery lies some of the personalities’ rest more valiant and illustrate of the independence wars, as well as some outstanding figures of the art and the Cuban culture.  This cemetery is home to the majestic mausoleum of the National Hero from Cuba, José Martí. The structure is true to Martí's wishes (expressed in one of his poems) that he be buried below the flag of Cuba and surrounded by roses. Besides this mausoleum there is a modest vault in a stone brought from Sierra Maestra, in which lies Fidel’s rest. Other highlights include the tombs of Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, the Father of Our Homeland, and those who died in the Moncada Barracks attack and a memorial to Cuban soldiers who have fallen in battle. 

Cuba's oldest museum was founded in 1899 by Emilio Bacardí Moreau, the former Santiago mayor whose rum-making family fled to Puerto Rico after the Revolution. It is just a few metres from the Parque Céspedes, in the heart of the city. The museum has an excellent collection of Cuban art, as well as some European works, some items from the wars of independence and an archaeological hall that features a 3,000-year-old Egyptian mummy, two Peruvian skeletons and a shrunken head. It houses the most important painting gallery in Cuba, displaying an enviable collection of colonial painting dating back two centuries.

The Basilica of Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre, the Patron Saint of Cuba, can be found 27 km from the city centre, in a mining town founded in 1830. The Basilica stands on a gentle hill and contains display cases with items such as the medal received by the writer Ernest Hemingway on being awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954. The story of the Virgin dates from the early 1600s, when three men in a boat first saw her floating on water during a storm; tradition holds that the Virgin saved the men from certain drowning. Records show that the statue was most likely brought from Spain on order of the then-governor of Cuba, but don't play iconoclast with the millions of faithful who take seriously the Virgin's reputed miraculous powers. Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre was crowned by Pope John Paul II in 1998, during his visit to Cuba. Every 8th of September, her feast day, thousands of pilgrims come here to give thanks and beg favours of the blessed virgin.

The Granjita Siboney Museum is located in the road to Playa Siboney Beach, in the province of Santiago de Cuba. It is the former encampment from where the youngsters that took the Moncada Headquarters, the second military fortress in the city of Santiago de Cuba, on July 26th 1953 left. In the 7 exhibition rooms of this museum you’ll also discover the historic house, the previous preparations to the famous assault, the development and the consequences it had for Cuba. It exhibits valuable documents and personal objects of some of the intrepid young rebels. Among its most valued objects are the semiautomatic M-1 with folded butt used by the revolutionaries during the assault, sports rifle, uniforms, documents, photographs.
